Nitric oxide (NO) is a crucial radical gas in the human body, but excessive production can lead to inflammatory diseases like rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Scavenging NO offers a potential treatment strategy. Our research developed a NO-responsive nanosized hydrogel (NO-Scv gel) that effectively scavenges NO and reduces inflammation. The NO-Scv gel, made from acrylamide and a NO-cleavable cross-linker (NOCCL), was shown to consume NO in a Griess assay. It demonstrated excellent biocompatibility and superior therapeutic effects in a mouse RA model compared to the commercial drug dexamethasone. These results suggest the NO-Scv gel’s potential for biomedical applications and further clinical development.-Scientific Journal cover by scapiens
