The Wikimedia project, including Wikipedia, is one of the largest communal data sets and serves as a representative medium for collective knowledge in the twenty-first century. By analyzing all 863 Wikimedia projects across various types and languages, researchers have uncovered a universal growth pattern in communal data formation. The study found that inequality emerges early in the development of Wikimedia projects and stabilizes at high levels. Using an agent-based model that considers the characteristics of editors, the researchers successfully reproduced these empirical results. This study shows that a small number of editors have a disproportionately large influence on the formation of collective knowledge. Insights from this analysis can help sustain various collaborative environments in the future. -Scientific Journal cover design by scapiens
