The development of robust separators with high thermal resistance is critical for ensuring the performance of electrochemical cells. A new freestanding hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) separator has been developed using a combination of liquid and thermal expansion exfoliation methods. This h-BN nanosheet separator offers superior ionic conductivity compared to commercial polymer separators and enhances the stability of lithium-ion cells by preventing dendritic lithium growth. Even after aging at high temperatures (80–120 °C), the h-BN separator maintains excellent thermal and electrochemical stability. In lithium titanate (LTO) batteries, these separators achieve a high Coulombic efficiency (~99%) after 600 cycles, significantly improving battery performance. The freestanding h-BN separator represents a promising solution for next-generation rechargeable batteries and high-safety energy storage systems. -Scientific Journal cover art design by scapiens
