[Science Journal Cover design] Micropipette Resonator Enabling Targeted Aspiration and Mass Measurement of Single Particles and Cells

Science Journal Cover

This study introduces micropipette resonators, which are mechanical resonator-integrated micropipettes. These devices enable the selective aspiration and mass measurement of particles or cells suspended in liquids using two orthogonal vibration modes. A custom pipette pulling system is employed to create an asymmetric cross-section with extended uniformity by providing power-modulated linear heating on a rotating glass capillary. The glass capillary is stretched, cut, polished, mounted on a metallic jig, and coated with metal, resulting in a doubly clamped tube resonator-integrated micropipette. An optical pickup is used for simultaneous frequency readouts of the two orthogonal modes, and digital phase-locked loops are employed for calibration. The buoyant masses of unicellular organisms like Paramecium aurelia swimming in a culture dish are successfully measured using these resonators.-Journal cover design by scapiens.
