Separating the cathode and anode sides of Li-O2 cells and using a suitable solution significantly improves efficiency and cyclability. A redox mediator that facilitates Li2O2 decomposition at the cathode cannot cross over to the Li metal anode, and an additive that stabilizes the Li metal anode is not attacked by oxygen species at the cathode.
