Sung-Hoon Ahn and his team have developed shape memory alloy (SMA) microactuators for use in artificial muscle fibers. The diamond-shaped frame structure of these actuators allows them to achieve up to 60 percent strain during tensile motion. Their high surface-area-to-volume ratio improves the thermal response of SMA, enabling an impressive actuation speed of 1.6 kHz with optical heating. – Journal cover design by scapiens
