[Scientific Journal cover art] 3D Hierarchical Nanotopography for On-Site Rapid Capture and Sensitive Detection of Infectious Microbial Pathogens

Rapid and effective detection of pathogenic bacteria responsible for pandemics or epidemics is crucial for global health surveillance. We introduce an innovative method combining hierarchical nanostructures and a nuclease-responsive DNA probe to capture and detect harmful bacteria on-site. The 3D bacterial capturing nanotopographical trap (b-CNT) uses advanced nanocilia and network structures for quick (<30 seconds) and irreversible bacterial capture. The DNA probe allows highly sensitive and rapid (<1 minute) detection. The b-CNT is proven effective for detecting dangerous pathogens like Escherichia coli O157, Salmonella enteritidis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Bacillus cereus on kitchen tools and food samples.
