Catalytic oxidation is a promising method for removing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) due to its low energy consumption, operating cost, and high efficiency. While platinum group metals (PGMs) are commonly used in VOC oxidation catalysts, there is a push to replace them with more affordable materials. This study presents a new non-PGM catalyst for benzene oxidation, incorporating copper and silver into a cerium–zirconium mixed oxide (CZCuAg). The synergy between the catalytic components allows for complete benzene oxidation at temperatures below 200°C. Structural characterization and in situ DRIFTS analyses reveal that the CZCuAg catalyst features copper(II) oxide for benzene adsorption and metallic silver for oxidation, operating via the Marks–van Krevelen mechanism. This development highlights the potential of CZCuAg as a cost-effective and efficient catalyst for VOC removal.-Scientific Journal cover design by scapiens
