Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a highly selective anticancer strategy with fewer side effects than traditional treatments. However, its clinical use is limited due to the shallow penetration depth of light. Recent studies suggest that Cerenkov luminescence-induced PDT might overcome this limitation, but its low luminescence intensity raises effectiveness concerns. To address this, researchers developed a radiolabeled liposome containing Eu-DTPA and photosensitizer VBBO (64Cu-Eu/VBBO lipo) that uses ionizing radiation for effective imaging and radioluminescence-induced PDT. The 64Cu-labeled Eu liposome showed strong radioluminescence, significantly higher than free 64Cu. This liposome achieved high tumor uptake and demonstrated superior therapeutic effects compared to traditional Cerenkov luminescence-induced PDT. This advancement suggests a promising future for clinical PDT applications, offering high tumor targeting and efficient energy transfer from radioisotopes.-Scientific Journal cover design by scapiens
