Hyunjung Shin and co-workers have successfully fabricated stable hexagonal non-close-packed (ncp) gold nanowires with a diameter of about 50 nm and aspect ratios exceeding 400. These single-crystalline gold nanowires are grown within nanotubular TiO2 arrays and exhibit 6-fold rotational symmetry as observed by TEM tilting experiments. The growth process involves the nucleation of very small face-centered cubic or ncp Au seeds on the inner surfaces of the TiO2 nanotubes, followed by a diffusion-limited growth.
